Faculty Handbook: Department Chair Responsibilities

 
Chair Eligibility
 
In accordance with UH Board of Regents’ Policy, only persons with the rank of Associate Professor or Professor are eligible. In addition, current Department Bylaws require that the Chair be a tenured faculty member within the department.

Chair Responsibilities
 
The Department of Nursing Chair is responsible to the Dean and works cooperatively with the Associate Deans to: 1) facilitate the self-study process, report, and site visit for re-accreditation of the
undergraduate nursing programs; and 2) plan, participate and facilitate transition to a revised undergraduate nursing curriculum as developed by the Hawai‘i Statewide Nursing Consortium. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
 
  1. Manages course offerings and assignments to ensure efficient and effective management and implementation of curricula
  2. Assures annual performance reviews of non-tenure track faculty
  3. Conducts assessments and contract renewals for tenure-track faculty, and recommends promotion and tenure
  4. Facilitates the work of the Undergraduate Curriculum, Student Affairs and Evaluation Committees
  5. Develops and manages a three year plan for numbers of undergraduate admissions in collaboration with Associate Dean
  6. Represents the Department on the Hawai‘i Statewide Nursing Consortium and facilitates new curricula development and implementation as appropriate
  7. Facilitates the accreditation self-study report and processes in collaboration with faculty and Associate Dean
  8. Convenes Department meetings
  9. Serves on appropriate committees such as the Undergraduate Student Affairs, Undergraduate Curriculum and Evaluation Committee, and special Taskforces
  10. Represents the department to the Manoa Council of Chairs
  11. Serves as a communication link between faculty, committee chairs, and Associate Dean on the undergraduate program
  12. Serves as a bridge between faculty and school administration
  13. Coordinates with Associate Dean ensuring compliance of University policies including the limiting of overload teaching
  14. Signatory on departmental forms requiring Dept Chair approval
  15. Participates in students’ activities as appropriate
  16. Collaborates with Office of Student Services and Associate Dean as needed to expedite registration, academic advising, progression and graduation for undergraduate students
  17. Collaborates with students, faculty, and Graduate Chair regarding data collection and analysis related to academic programs
  18. Collaborates with nursing programs and agencies on clinical utilization and facilities
  19. Prepares and submits annual report on May 30 detailing accomplishments, activities and recommendations for the department, State Board, accreditation, and other reports as necessary
  20. Works with Associate Dean on undergraduate student orientation and student professional activities
  21. Completes national and state surveys related to undergraduate education and workforce and submits to Associate Dean as needed
  22. Assumes additional duties as required
In addition, the Chair is responsible for the following activities with support from staff:
 
  1. Collaborates with nursing programs and agencies on clinical utilization and facilities
  2. Schedules courses within the department and campus
  3. Schedules distance and technology-based education
  4. Identifies clinical sites and coordinates placements
