UH Manoa Nursing Faculty and Students Embark on a 4-Month Mission on the USN MERCY
On Thursday, May 10, 2012, members of the UH Manoa Nursing faculty and graduate students boarded the USN MERCY to begin a 4-month mission with a United States Navy program called Pacific Partnership 2012. The mission will travel to Indonesia, Philippines, Cambodia and Vietnam, and faculty and staff will serve as subject matter experts in partnership with local public and community health nurses.
Professor Carrie Davis and Nursing Graduate Student Sarah Sanderlin will participate in the entire 4-month mission. Professor Gary Glauberman will join them for 3-months of the mission and will complete 3 ports of call. Professor Teresa Parsons, Professor Kristine Qureshi, Nursing Graduate Students Amanda Trienen-Aiea and Hoku Porter, both who are ‘IKE AO PONO students will each participate in one port of call during the summer.
AAPINA Nursing Conference March, 2012
The Asian American Pacific Islander Nurse’s Association (AAPINA) held their 9th Annual National Conference – Healthcare Reform: Impact on Research, Practice and Education on March 22-24, 2012 at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas, NV. UHM SONDH and ‘IEK AO PONO student Kamomilani Anduha Wong was in attendance along with colleagues for a poster presentation on: Evaluation of a Kidney Early Detection Screening (KEDS) Program in Hawaii Utilizing Culturally Competent Grass-roots Community Based Approaches.
2012 Undergraduate Honors Program Features our ‘IKE AO PONO student: Johnelle Chock
Johnelle has completed her project, “Raising Awareness of Elder Abuse Prevention in the Community: A Community Based Participatory Research Approach”, and presented it both as a SONDH brown bag and received 1st place for the social science presentation at the UH Honors Proposal Conference.
YMCA’s Healthy Kids Fair

Undergraduate 1st semester students took part in the Healthy Kids Fair held at the Bishop Museum. Students provided information about healthy eating and exercise as well as protection from the sun. Students passed out sunscreen, sun visors, healthy eating menu plans, and recipe cards for low calorie dishes.
Undergraduate 6th Semester Poster Presentation
Students in their 6th semester created posters to present their project they had been working on as part of their course work.

Students of ‘IKE AO PONO program were recognized for their scholarship awards for the 2012-2013 academic year. Scholarships awarded were Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship, ‘IKE AO PONO, E ALA PONO, Kuakini Health Systems Foundation Scholarship, and UH Academic Achievement Awards.
