Office of Research and Extramural Programming

                  

THE PURPOSE OF OREP is to assist faculty and students with research endeavors.  With guidance from the Dean and Associate Dean for Research, OREP serves as the central coordinating unit for the SONDH's externally sponsored research activities and projects. OREP is responsible for developing, sponsoring, and coordinating all research and research-related activities at the School.  OREP's primary role is to provide assistance to its customers by:

  • Identifying potential funding sources
  • Providing guidance for proposal development
  • Facilitating the creation of proposal budgets
  • Processing grant and contract submissions
  • Facilitating coordination with the UH offices and sponsoring agencies
  • Establishing awards accounts
  • Promoting standards for the conduct of research
  • Creating a repository of scholarship and research activities
  • Providing resources that support research activities for faculty and students
  • Offering opportunities that advance collaborative research activities between SONDH and strategic partners

  • Develops, supports, and coordinates the Office of Research and Extramural Programming at the SONDH
  • Facilitates implementation of support mechanisms to assist faculty and students
  • Conducts CQI program within the School
  • Manages approved research operating budget

Jim Kowalski, Fiscal Officer, 808-956-0533, jamesmk@hawaii.edu

  • Reviews and conducts final approval of all extramural fiscal transactions
  • Assists and advised faculty and staff in post-award management
  • Conducts annual audits of each grant and contract, clarifying any budgetary discrepancies
  • Communicates with Office of Research Services & Research Corporation of UH regarding all extramural post-award management activities
  • Prepares each account for opening and closing

Dongmei Li, Biostatistician, 808-956-6025, dongmeil@hawaii.edu

  • Prepares sample size calculations and data analysis for proposals
  • Assists with database formatting and management
  • Conducts a wide array of statistical analyses
  • Assists PIs with interpretation of results

  • Reviews all extramural fiscal transactions
  • Provides support and coaching to faculty and staff in post-award management
  • Provides support for Fiscal Operations

Sharee Pepper, PhD, Grant Writing Coach, 808-956-4556, spepper@hawaii.edu

  • Coaches and provides feedback to Principal Investigators on proposal drafts before submission to funding agencies.
  • Assists applicants in developing and submitting competitive research proposals for local, national, and federal agencies.
  • Evaluates and assesses projects for scientific merit and performs scientific and administrative reviews and analyses of research proposals.

Patsy Yamane, Pre-Award Coordinator, 808-956-0534, pyamane@hawaii.edu

  • Assists faculty with grant, proposal, or contract submission to ORS with all required forms, following policies and procedures of each submission.
  • Prepares and works with the principal investigator(s) on the proposal/pre-award budget and grant application or contract.
  • Assists with the processing and submission of continuation reports and other post award submissions via ORS and provides support to ensure awards are compliant with appropriate terms and conditions.
  • Manages the OREP email and responds to general office-related inquires and issues.
     

The Office of Research and Extramural Programming is located in the Biomedical Sciences building on the first floor of the C-court, room C105.
