Program Description
The Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist Program prepares registered nurses for advanced practice in the area of adult health nursing. Clinical Nurse Specialists focus on advanced care, research, consultation, program management, and education. The program is designed to prepare clinical nurse specialists to provide advanced nursing care to improve health outcomes of acutely and critically ill adult patients in a variety of settings.

UH Mānoa School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene offers the only Adult CNS program in the state of Hawai'i.

The program provides a foundation of clinical expertise with a broad based yet in-depth knowledge in a nursing specialty area.

Didactic courses are offered via electronic distance learning methodologies.

Students can enroll either full-time (2-years) or part-time (3-years).
Program Outcomes
At the conclusion of the program, the graduate is awarded a Master of Science and is eligible to take the American Nurses' Credentialing Center (ANCC) national examination for Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist advanced certification.
The graduate is prepared for a leadership role including to:

develop, implement, evaluate and manages population-based programs of care

provide expert nursing care to complex patients in a variety of health care settings

develop and evaluate innovative interventions to achieve improved clinical and fiscal outcomes

collaborate with multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary teams to coordinate health care services and implement best practice models
-
develop research utilization projects that lead to innovative health care practices, and evaluating products and devices
-
serve as leader/mentor/consultant in advancing the practice of nursing among other nurses and across organizations to achieve outcomes

develop, evaluate, advocate and provide leadership for health care policy and delivery

Note A: Gen Core Courses The Gen Core Courses are included in every specialty program. Each core course is offered every fall, spring and summer semester. NURS 620 and NURS 625 must be taken during the first year (fall, spring or summer) of the program for all full and part time students.

Note B: Advanced Practice Core (APRN Core) courses are included in all Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Nurse Specialist Specialties. The three APRN Core courses are pre and co requisites for NURS 693, which is the advanced practice clinical course. What this means is: you must have completed all three courses, or have completed two and be enrolled in the third APRN Core course in order to register for NURS 693.

Note C: Clinical Nurse Specialist clinical hours 12 clinical credits (11 credits of NURS 693 AND 1 cr of NURS 615); (540 hours are required for graduation- 1 credit of NURS 693 = 45 clinical hours, 1 credit of NURS 615 = 45 clinical hours).
Note D: Each semester each graduate student is expected to contact their Specialty Program Director for advisement regarding coursework for the next semester. Part time pathways will be developed for students on an individual basis.
