Master’s Entry Program in Nursing (next admission is Fall 2009)

The University of Hawaii at Manoa School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene is pleased to announce an accelerated alternative entry program to our Master’s of Science in Nursing degree.  The Master’s Entry Program in Nursing is designed for adult learners:

With no prior nursing experience/education

  • Who have baccalaureate degrees in other than nursing fields
  • Who are leadership bound and seeking a career in advanced practice nursing.

The purpose of this alternative entry program is to equip the student with entry-level professional nurse competencies as a foundation for advanced practice roles. The program consists of a very intensive pre-licensure year structured as three continuous semesters transitioning into one of specialty nursing pathways. This direct entry into the Master’s program replaces the current accelerated baccalaureate or “fast track” program. The length of time necessary to graduate at the Master’s level is dependent on the specialty area selected by the learner.

Description of the program:

The first year curriculum is based on a competency model appropriate for graduate level adult learners. Active learning strategies are emphasized including clinical experiences, simulation exercises, and a continuous emphasis on searching the literature for the most current information to inform the actions of the nurse. The organizing framework draws heavily from the “Determinants of Health” as presented in the “Healthy People 2010” national agenda (http://www.healthypeople.gov/) and will emphasize health promotion and disease prevention as well as the care of the sick, well and dying from a local, national and global perspective.  A substantial amount of the curriculum is clinical practicum in community and hospital/health care settings where students are actively engaged in nursing care under the supervision and guidance of faculty. A seminar in professional nursing anchoring each of the three semesters of the first year will examine the various contexts (i.e., historical, social) of nursing, the roles the nurse plays, and the core values of the profession.

This Fall 2007 we began a new Masters Degree of Nursing in Public/Community Health

The MS in Public / Community Health is a 36 credit program being designed to prepare nurses to assume leadership roles in the various venues of public and community health.  Graduates will be competent to serve as agency or project managers, researchers, consultants, or providers of care in the public or community health settings. Each student will be able to choose their own specific focus area within public or community health (for example: community based maternal child services, disaster preparedness, correctional health, school health, occupational health, ambulatory care, etc.).  The initial offering of this program will be in person, evening classes at the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus in Honolulu. Future plans are in development to migrate the program to a distance based format.
