Clinical Area of Focus: adult health, anthropology
I received my M.S at UCSF in adult health nursing and a minor in education and worked at local hospital for 6 years as an adult clinical specialist. My work with patients with chronic renal disease initially then was needed in other areas such as medical nursing, ortho-neurosurgical specialty, diabetes, and gerontology. I helped developed many specialty units working with patients and staff to improved the care to patients on those units. After being enticed to the UHM, I taught many courses in the B.S. nursing program in adult health, culture, management, fundamentals, and complex nursing care. I initiated the cooperative education program in nursing in 1990 and still help organize it each year with the UH Cooperative Education Office Coordinator. My love for anthropology had been long standing from my undergraduate education. While in the clinical setting, I felt need to better understand Pacific Islander cultures particularly Samoan. I had the opportunity to take many Samoan language and culture courses in my graduate anthropology program. My research focus continues in the area of early detection of breast cancer with Samoan women. I was also interested in the teaching-learning process and did my dissertation on how nursing students from different cultures learned best.
Teaching Topics: quality and case management and culture in the undergraduate program, the capstone and culture diversity in nursing education in the master's nursing education track and PhD program.
