The School of Nursing & Dental Hygiene has been awarded $1.5 million for a five-year P20 Grant by the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Nursing Research for the “Center for ‘Ohana Self-Management for Chronic Illnesses Hawai‘i”. Congratulations to Dr. Jillian Inouye, Principal Investigator, and Pilot Project Principal Investigators Drs. Margaret Nield, Anne Leake and Kathleen Sullivan.

The initial projects will use social learning theory as the framework for three conceptually linked projects; 1) self-efficacy and self-management for persons with symptomatic HIV disease; 2) kalusagan ay kayamanan (health is wealth) type 2 diabetes prevention in Filipinos; and 3) a breathing pattern retraining self-management intervention with an interactive telecommunication system for persons with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
