Hui Ola Pono

As part of the School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene’s (SONDH) responsibility to improve our community, a Family Health Training and Resource Center has been created. Hui Ola Pono is the community-based service vehicle for the SONDH; its primary focus is the delivery of services and education and/or training of health professionals and paraprofessionals. The Hawaiian name, chosen because it embodies the values, beliefs and spirit of the school’s mission, derives from:
▪Hui which is an alliance of combined energy to achieve agreed upon purposes and goals.
▪Ola that describes life, health, well-being.
▪Pono that describes right relationship, right intention and right action collectively created by all participants

Hui Ola Pono is an innovative, interdisciplinary community where students, faculty and partners promote health in Hawai‘i through learning and service.
SONDH is excited to announce its first collaboration with the Department of Human Services (DHS) in creating this Center designed to improve the efficacy of the Medicaid system in Hawai‘i. Medicaid is a joint federal-state health insurance program and is the largest source of funding for medical and health-related services for people with limited income.
Areas of Interest:
▪Access to child and adolescent mental health services
▪Community based care for the growing geriatric population
▪Access to health services in rural areas
▪Foster parent training focused on health promotion
▪Needs of children under child protective services supervision
▪Education for and access to dental/oral health services
▪Early Periodic Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment (EPSDT)
▪Child and adolescent health
Current Projects:
▪Increasing Access on the Part of Children and Youth to the State’s Medicaid-Funded Mental Health Services (cooperative initiative with the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Division of the Hawai‘i Department of Health)
▪ Conducting quality assurance activities related to the MedQuest program
