A faculty member since 1991, my primary areas of teaching have included population health, community health nursing, rural health teams, health care management, oral communications and therapeutic interviewing. I have served on and currently chair the curriculum and evaluation committee of the undergraduate nursing program. University committees have included the Honors Council and the Writing-focus Board. Having lived with type 1 diabetes, diabetes education, diabetes care, and population based approaches to diabetes prevention and control have remained my areas of scholarly work and focused research, with a particular interest in children, teens, and the transition into young adulthood. I frequently involve students in a number of diabetes activities in the community.

Having been a founding member of a number of diabetes organizations in Hawaii, as a part of my practice as a  public health professional, I have worked extensively with many organizations at the national and international level. These include American Diabetes Association, the Diabetes Control Program of the State Department of Health, the CDC, the NIH/National High Blood Pressure Education Program, the Asian and Pacific Community Health Organization, the International Diabetes Federation, etc. From 1997 to 2005, I served on the board of directors of the American Association of Diabetes Educators and as the national president from 2002-2003.

A former public health nurse, I have served in a number of capacities at the Hawaii State Department of Health, including Home Health Administrator, Chief of Chronic Disease Branch, and my appointment by Governor Linda Lingle as Deputy Director of Health from December 2002 until Auggust 2004. In addition to diabetes care and education, my areas of professional nursing practice include systems development and strategic planning, advocacy, and public policy.
