Clinical Area of Focus: maternal-child, community health

I began nursing as a practical nurse working on a medical floor of a major medical center. Through the years nursing has provided many opportunities for me including continued education. From medicine I moved into critical care for 10 years and after an experience in the Cambodian refugee camps in Thailand I changed my focus to perinatal nursing. I subspecialized in high-risk antepartum, critical care intrapartum and maternal-infant relationships including breastfeeding. As I moved from hospital to community my practice became public health focused, which is where I work today. My research has focused on mothers and babies, particularly around infant feeding issues. My dissertation research working with Ojibwe women was funded by NINR Pre-Doctoral Fellowship (NINR 1-F31 NR 07211,1997-1999) and Sigma Theta Tau International (research grant).

I have worked throughout my career in multicultural environments and have a strong commitment to culturally relevant teaching/learning and health care. You will see my research also reflects this perspective, as does my work with the Center for the Advancement of Health Disparities Research (NINR & NCMHD P20 NR08360-05). The scope of my work is reflected in my publication. Additional research funding was obtained from Woo-Yee Foundation (Hong Kong), Pan-Asian Lactation Consultant Association (Hong-Kong) and intramural sources (Hong Kong University, Duke University, University of Hawai`i) including a Research Career Development Award from the Vice Chancellor for Research (UHM) in 2006.
