Clinical Area of Focus: Maternal-Newborn & Child and Adolescent Health
The focus of my work has been development and teaching the maternal-newborn nursing course and clinical lab for the undergraduate generic and accelerated BS nursing programs. Health promotion and maintenance for the childbearing family is examined through multiple aspects (physiologic, cultural, environmental, and behavioral). To provide depth to the experience, each student is mentored while developing a community teaching project for an individual client/family whose delivery due date falls during the semester.
My research focuses on adolescent pregnancy and its impact on the family. I have interviewed mothers of young pregnant adolescents (13 – 15 years old) to learn about their relationship with their daughters prior to pregnancy and as the pregnancy progresses. The result of this research is significant because there is very little published literature in this area.
I currently provide service to the university as the elected representative from the Department of Nursing to the University of Hawai‘i Manoa Faculty Senate (2007-2009). I serve on the Department of Nursing, undergraduate curriculum committee representing the maternal-newborn course.
Teaching Topics:
Maternal-Newborn Nursing: trends & issues, pregnancy, labor & delivery, post-partum, parent-newborn interaction, newborn nutrition, newborn care, family planning (birth control, infertility, genetic screening,& counseling), high risk pregnancy, high risk childbirth, postpartum complications, high risk newborn, adolescent pregnancy, battering in pregnancy, and neonatal loss.
