Clinical Area of Focus: adult mental health

My focus in nursing research is HIV prevention with a particular interest in self-efficacy for disclosure of HIV status to sex partners, and self-efficacy for negotiating safer sex.  This stems from a broader interest in interpersonal communication, and a strong belief that nurses have a critical role in HIV prevention, as we have license to discuss sensitive information with people.

For five years I served as a project director for a grant sponsored by the CDC entitled, Bridges to a Healthier Hawai'i:  Service Learning for Total Health & HIV Prevention.  Faculty incorporated the pedagogy of service-learning into a mental health nursing course, which afforded students the opportunity to learn through serving in the community.  This was rewarding for the students on many fronts.

I enjoy teaching mental health nursing in a multicultural context.  I have practiced nursing in Hawaii and Australia, and served as an Ambassador of Goodwill in Fiji, through a Rotary International Grant for University Teachers Serving in Developing Countries.  Rural health nursing education is a scholarly and academic endeavor I will continue to develop and pursue.  I am also currently licensed to provide foster care to children of Hawaii who are in need.
