Mission and Goals
Vision
The School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene’s (SONDH) vision is to be the leader in nursing and dental hygiene education and research in Hawaii with outreach to Asia and the Pacific Basin.
Mission
The SONDH supports the mission of the University of Hawaii at Manoa: to provide an innovative, caring and multicultural enviornment in which faculty, students and staff work together to generate and transmit knowledge, wisdom, and values to promote quality of life and health for present and future generations. To better reflect Hawaii's unique cultural diversity and heritage, the SONDH is committed to increasing Native Hawaiian and other underserved people in all nursing and dental hygiene programs.
The school is committed to the following:
- Educating qualified people in the disciplines of nursing and dental hygiene;
- Using learning approaches that are appropriate to the needs of students and facilitating achievement of health outcomes within the diverse communities of the state of Hawaii and the Pacific Basin;
- Advancing knowledge through research; and
- Designing and implementing nursing and dental hygiene services.
Goals
- Prepare members of the nursing and dental hygiene profession, capable of culturally appropriate knowledge development, provision of care, coordination and collaboration, as demonstrated by success on licensure examinations and employer and consumer satisfaction.
- Provide quality educational programs recognized by full accreditation from selected national credentialing bodies.
- Increase access to educational programs within the State and Pacific Basin in dental hygiene and nursing through distance education.
- Improve health outcomes of the people of Hawaii and the Pacific Basin through leadership, research, service, and practice.
- Use state resources efficiently to increase the availability of nurses and dental hygienists for the State of Hawaii.
- Achieve a seamless system for the education of nurses and dental hygienists within the state through intra-system collaboration.
Strategic Plan
The SONDH Strategic Plan, congruent with the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus plan, is an ongoing effort to measure progress towards our strategic imperatives using benchmarks. Major strengths of the SONDH include education, research, service, and practice.
