Admission Requirements - MS in Nursing

Admission Requirements

To be admitted, applicants must meet the requirements of both the Graduate Education and the graduate admissions committee of the Department of Nursing.

Requirements for the School of Nursing 

  1. A baccalaureate degree
  2. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  3. Completion of a course in statistics
  4. A basic research course or equivalent
  5. Interview with program specialty adviser

Requirements for Prospective Students from Other Countries

Admission requirements for students from other countries vary slightly from the usual requirements.

  1. TOEFL score must be 580 (internet score 92) or above.
  2. Graduation from a NON-accredited program may be acceptable.

B.    Department of Nursing

1.      Department of Nursing Application

2.      Current resume or curriculum vitae

3.      Two completed references forms (one from a former faculty member and one from an agency supervisor).

4.      Copy of Hawaii Board of Nursing license or application for license. (APHN applicants – the copy of your current professional RN license or application for licensure does not need to be specific to Hawaii)

5.      Writing Sample requirements for the 2013 Application Cycle:

Health literacy is a significant issue within the U.S. health care system.  Write an essay on a current issue or challenge related to health literacy within the U.S. healthcare system.

Specifically address the following:

A.    Outline a significant issue or challenge

B.    Discuss one strategy for addressing the issue or challenge

Requirements:  The writing sample must demonstrate writing abilities and familiarity/critical assessment of the topic. The paper will be evaluated in terms of clarity, completeness, depth of discussion, use of evidence, and format (including such elements as style, neatness, grammar and spelling).

1.      500 words maximum, double spaced, typed, 1” margins and an 11-12 point font (Arial or Times New Roman).  

2.      Use a consistent formatting style.  The Departmental standard is APA format. 

3.      Include a title page and sequentially number all pages beginning with the title page. The title page and the reference page are not included in the 500 word limit.

4.      Papers exceeding the 500 word limit will not be reviewed.

5.      Submit your writing sample in hard copy only.
