Dr. Cheryl Albright, UHM Nursing professor and Dr. Lorrie Wong, UHM Nursing associate professor and Translational Health Science Simulation Center (THSSC) director, in collaboration with Dr. Michael Nagoshi, John A. Burns School of Medicine assistant professor received $100,000 in funding from the HMSA Foundation. The grant will test the effectiveness of training programs designed specifically for providers of primary care including: physicians, pediatricians, nurses, and other allied health providers.
The providers will be trained on patient-centered motivational interviewing techniques with their patients. A 3-4 hour workshop for 100 providers will be offered on a Saturday afternoon and over the ensuing 5 months, personalized 2-hour training sessions with standardized patients will be conducted at UHM Nursing’s THSSC on Saturday afternoons. Joan Maeshiro, AANP 2013 Preceptor of the Year
Geriatric Nurse Practitioner Joan Maeshiro was recognized as the 2013 UHM SONDH Preceptor of the Year at the American Association of Nurse Practitioners Nurse Practitioner Week Celebration, held on November 16, 2013, at Natsunoya Tea House. Maeshiro’s award was presented to her by two of her previous students, AGNP Roger Goodell and current AGNP student Christi Silano.
Maeshiro was nominated by UHM Nursing clinical faculty and her former APRN students. She is an experienced clinician who serves as a role model for NP students as she teaches them in a clinical setting at The Queen's Medical Center Geriatric Clinic as well as during home visits. Maeshiro was recognized as an expert who encourages and guides students utilizing evidence based practice guidelines. She provides immediate feedback for student’s clinical progress, discussing strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvement.
Maeshiro is a UH Mānoa Nursing 1982 BSN graduate, and a 2006 MSN graduate. She is married to Glenn Nishida and has two sons: Matthew Nishida, who is attending Boston Conservatory of Music, and Nathan Nishida, a UH Mānoa Nursing 2013 BSN graduate. In her spare time “Farmer Joan” enjoys raising chickens and produce at her Kaneohe home. Nursing Students Take Top Honors at UH Manoa Research Proposal Conference
At the campus Honors Fall Research Proposal Conference, two UHM BS Nursing Honor students, Courtney Chamberlain and Heather Szeles, received awards for their research proposal presentations. Heather's presentation, "Emotional Intelligence and Nursing Student Leadership", received honorable mention for Social Sciences at the symposium, and Courtney's presentation, "Undergraduate nursing students experience with multi-user virtual environments" received first prize in the Social Sciences division. Both Heather and Courtney are entering their final semester this spring and anticipate graduation in May 2014.
