More than 100 High School Students Attend Nursing Open House

UH Manoa Nursing hosted more than 100 Hawaii high school students and their parents over two High School Direct Entry into Nursing Program (HSDEN) Open House events on Saturday, October 14, 2017, and Saturday, November 18, 2017.

The High School Direct Entry into Nursing Program offers direct entry to nursing for high school graduates who are dedicated to completing their Bachelor of Science in nursing degree in four years. Students can have confidence that they have been admitted to the nursing program while they complete their prerequisite classes in a cohort based learning model. Students enter the program in the fall of their freshman year.

Guests at the event were welcomed by Associate Deans Drs. Clementina Ceria-Ulep and Kristine Qureshi who shared about academic and research opportunities available to UH Manoa Nursing students. Department Chair Dr. Alice Tse highlighted the wide variety of workplace environments available to nurses as well as current employment trends in nursing.

UH Manoa Translational Health Science Simulation Center Director Dr. Lorrie Wong provided an overview of healthcare simulation before students and parents toured the Center to see the use of technology and simulation training in nursing education. Nursing Student Ambassadors, student leaders selected to represent the School, led the tours and offered a first-hand perspective to the prospective students.

A student panel comprised of junior and senior nursing students was facilitated by Dr. Tse and Associate Professor Dr. Karol Richardson. Topics covered by the panelists ranged from the difference between high school and college, how many hours per week they study, surprises encountered while giving patient care, and the benefits of being in the High School Direct Entry into Nursing Program.

The High School Direct Entry into Nursing Program admits students every fall. For more information on the Program, visit www.nursing.hawaii.edu/bachelor/hsden or contact Pre-Nursing Advisor and Admissions Specialist Brian Akiyama at (808) 956-3794 or bsnurs@hawaii.edu.
