Course Descriptions

NURS 650 Complementary and Traditional Care (3 credits) A review of theoretical systems and approaches to complementary and traditional care in culturally diverse populations with a focus on wellness. Appropriate for all health-care professionals.

NURS 739 Advanced Nursing Science (3 credits) Provides opportunities to know and practice the process of theory development in nursing and to test concepts, relationships, and models about health behavior in culturally diverse populations.

NURS 741 Quantitative Methods and Measures (3 credits) Critical analysis of quantitative research methods used to analyze problems of interest to nursing in culturally diverse populations. Pre: NURS 620 or equivalent or consent.

NURS 742 Qualitative Methods and Measures (3 credits) Application of qualitative research methods in the development of clinical nursing disciplinary knowledge related to culturally diverse populations. Pre: NURS 620 or consent.

NURS 745 Creative Learning Strategies for Adults (2 credits) Analysis of forces that affect adult learners. Concept of lifelong learning vis-à-vis development of creative strategies that assist maturing, self-directed persons to develop their potentialities. (Cross-listed as EDEA 745 and EDEP 745)

NURS 747 Curriculum Development (3 credits) Current theories, issues, and trends of curriculum development in nursing. Application and critiques of related research.

NURS 748 Supervised Practicum in Teaching (2-5 credits) Supervised experience in instructional planning and teaching. Pre: NURS 747 (or concurrent) or consent.

NURS 751 Concept Development & Analysis (3 credits) First course offering in-depth analysis of specific concepts and theoretical formulations of nursing and other disciplines pertinent to the student's area of research interest. Addresses human responses to health in culturally diverse populations. Pre: NURS 739

NURS 752 Advanced Statistics I (3 credits) Advanced application of general linear model theory to analyze quantitative problems of interest to nursing in culturally diverse populations. Pre: NURS 741

NURS 753 Advanced Statistics II (3 credits) Advanced application of general model statistics to problems relevant to nursing with emphasis on multivariate approaches. Pre: NURS 752.

NURS 767 Culturally Competent Research Methods (3 credits) Analysis of concepts, issues and methods in conducting culturally competent research in the health field Pre: graduate level research methods or statistics.

NURS 777 Nursing Research Practicum I (3 credits) Directed research experience providing opportunity to gain mastery research skills and techniques through participation in faculty research. Repeatable once. Pre: NURS 741 and NURS 742.

NURS 699 Proposal Development (1 credit)

NURS 800 Dissertation Research (V) Research for doctoral dissertation. Repeatable. Pre: consent.


Mandatory Campus Visits

Students are required to be on campus for intensive sessions, comprehensive exam, and the proposal and dissertation defense. The first intensive will be for one week and is held on campus during the summer prior to the fall semester. The objectives include: introduction to the facilities and the faculty; orientation to the program, courses for the fall and spring terms, library resources, web-based instruction, financial and other resources; networking with other students, mentors, advisors, faculty; and socialization to the field. The second and subsequent on campus visits will be to further enhance emersion with a community of scholars, networking with peers, mentoring, advising, faculty meetings, student and faculty presentations of their research at the colloquiums; students are also required to be present on campus for the comprehensive exam and the proposal and dissertation defense.

The comprehensive examination will be a PowerPoint presentation based on the two publishable papers which fit the student’s research topic, conceptual framework and be approved by the advisor. The two papers serve as the vehicle by which breadth and depth of proficiency in knowledge development and scholarship of the research topic are assessed (to include methods utilized).
