Post-MS in Nursing Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements
To be admitted, applicants must meet the requirements of both the Graduate Division and the graduate admissions committee of the Department of Nursing.

Requirements for the School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene

  • A baccalaureate degree with a major in nursing from an NLNAC- or CCNE-accredited program.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in undergraduate nursing courses.
  • Completion of a course in statistics.
  • A basic research course or equivalent.
  • Copy of your Hawaii State Nursing License (or application for).
  • Documentation Requirements.
  • A curriculum vita or resume.
  • A  Master’s degree with a major in nursing from an NLNAC – or- CCNE-accredited program 
  • Two reference forms completed (one from a former faculty member and one from an agency supervisor).
  • Writing Sample:

For all graduate programs, your writing sample at minimum should demonstrate not only your writing abilities but also familiarity and critical assessment of issues or topics in nursing, health care or related subjects. Your paper will be evaluated in terms of clarity and completeness in expressing your ideas, the depth of discussion, and format (including such elements as style, neatness, grammar and spelling).

For applicants to Nursing Administration and Nursing Administration/MBA programs, a one or two page paper is acceptable, however, it should meet the minimum requirements as stated above.

For Nursing Programs which include Family, Adult, Geriatric, Pediatric, Psychiatric/Mental Health and Nursing Education, your paper should be scholarly and include references. You may submit papers which were used for previous course work or publications.

For the PhD program, your scholarly paper should meet the criteria described above, including proper citation of appropriate references. If you have a scholarly paper or publication related to your area of research interest, please submit it as your writing sample.

Requirements for Admission to Clinical Courses

  • Current Hawaii licensure to practice professional nursing.
  • A current CPR certificate from an approved American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support (Health Provider Level BLS Course).
  • Liability and malpractice insurance with a minimum coverage of $1 million per incident, $3 million aggregate (coverage is purchased through the school).
  • Immunizations and titers as required by the School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene.
  • Health insurance.

Requirements for Prospective Students from Other Countries
Admission requirements for students from other countries vary slightly from the usual requirements.

  • TOEFL score must be 580 or above.
  • Graduation from a NON-accredited program may be acceptable.
