Program Information for BS Nursing Program

The Academic Program
The purpose of the bachelor of science program is to prepare a generalist professional nurse to deliver care in a variety of health care settings, meet the state requirements for eligibility to take the National Council Licensure Examination - Registered Nurse NCLEX-RN (TM), and provide a foundation for graduate study in nursing. Potential applicants to the program are highly encouraged to attend an informational session provided by the Office of Student Services.
 
There are four different pathways to enter the BS nursing program;
     1. Executive RN to BS (Note: Extended Admission Application: March 1, 2012. For more information, please contact RNBS@hawaii.edu)
     2. Upper Division Hawaii State Nursing Consortium
     3. High School Direct Entry
     4. Traditional BS
 
Executive RN to BS Nursing Program  (updated 01/25/2012)
The new Executive RN to BS program is designed to provide an efficient bridge to the baccalaureate for RNs with an associate degree. The program builds upon initial nursing preparation with course work to enhance professional development, prepare for a broader scope of practice, and provide an increased understanding of the cultural, economic, and social issues that affect the delivery of safe, quality patient care.[1]

Upper Division Hawaii State Nursing Consortium
This curriculum, offered across the UH system, is designed to provide nursing students with a strong clinical and academic curriculum. Students seeking admission to the nursing program must complete prerequisite courses before enrolling in nursing.  Students may apply at the end of the first semester of year 1, and once accepted to the Department of Nursing; students enroll in the courses listed in sequence for three additional years.
 
High School Direct Entry
The High School Direct Entry Into Nursing Program (HS-DEN) is for Hawai'i high school seniors choosing a career in nursing. This program provides an opportunity to enter the nursing program upon admission to UH Mānoa. The 4 -year Baccalaureate Nursing program includes1 year of pre-nursing courses followed by 3 years of nursing and core classes. Students who complete the degree are eligible to take the RN licensure examination (NCLEX-RN).

Traditional Entry into Nursing Program 
For all other interested students applications are accepted after completion of the required first semester coursework and enrollment in the second semester coursework. For more detailed information you may attend an Informational Session.
Informational Sessions 
All Undergraduate Informational Sessions listed below are held in Webster 201 on a first come first served basis. Please arrive on time for your session. We will not be able to accommodate late arrivals in the session.

  • March 5, 10:30am-12:00pm
  • March 22, 10:30am-12:00pm
  • April 9, 1:30pm-3:00pm
  • May 3, 10:30am-12:00pm

Application and Admission Requirements
Application to the undergraduate nursing program requires timely submission of a UH System Application (if applicable), Nursing Program Application, successful completion of stated prerequisites, and a copy of a successfully completed entrance exam, all as discussed on documents provided.
