NURS 210 Health Promotion Across the Lifespan 

NURS 210L Health Promotion Across the Lifespan lab

Eligibility
To be eligible for the Course Credit by Exam option, the student must:
Be a veteran of the United States military
Have documentation of military medical training or healthcare experience
Does not hold a Registered Nurse license
Be accepted in a SONDH undergraduate nursing program
Meet with the SONDH’s veteran advisor/counselor
Challenge the course in May prior to the NURS 210 Fall semester enrollment
 
Requirements
In order to gain course credit for NURS 210 / NURS 210L, student veterans are required to pass the: 
(1) Comprehensive Exam, 
(2) Skills Testing, 
(3) Written Care Plan, and
(4) Standardized Specialty Exam. 
 
All four course requirements must be successfully completed in order to receive course credit for both the didactic and lab portion of NURS 210 / NURS 210L Health Promotion across the Lifespan. Since the didactic and lab portions of each course are considered co-requisites, partial credit will not be granted i.e., student veterans will not receive course credit for NURS 210 if they pass the didactic portion, but fail the lab or fail the didactic portion, but pass the lab.
 
(1) Comprehensive Exam 
The Comprehensive Exam consists of a dosage calculation test and an exam similar to the one taken by other students. Student veterans must pass the dosage calculation portion of the test with a minimum of 90% and the Comprehensive Exam with a minimum of 74%. Upon successfully completing both requirements of the Comprehensive Exam, the student veteran may proceed to challenge the Skills Testing.
 
(2) Skills Testing 
Skills Testing will include fundamental nursing skills such as Vital Signs, Physical Assessment, Oral Medication Administration, and Sterile Procedures (Sterile Dressing or Sterile Urinary Catheter) that will be demonstrated in the presence of the VBSN faculty. Student veterans must receive a 100% passing grade within three (3) attempts.
 
(3) Written Care Plan 
With prior instruction and resources, the student veteran will submit a Written Care Plan based on a case study of a patient with a health care problem e.g., congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The Written Care Plan will be graded by the designated faculty on a Pass/Fail basis.
 
(4) Standardized Specialty Exam 
Student veterans must complete the Standardized Specialty Exam. The results of the Exam will be reviewed by the VBSN faculty to determine the student’s potential for success and may suggest the student complete the course rather than pursue the Course Credit by Exam option according to the Undergraduate Curriculum and Evaluation Committee’s approved current practice. 
 

 

NURS 212 Pathophysiology 

Eligibility
To be eligible for the Course Credit by Exam option, the student must:
Be a veteran of the United States military
Have documentation of military medical training or healthcare experience
Be accepted in a SONDH undergraduate Nursing program
Meet with the SONDH’s veteran advisor/counselor
Challenge the course in May prior to the NURS 212 Pathophysiology Fall semester enrollment
 
Requirements
In order to gain course credit for NURS 212 Pathophysiology, student veterans are required to pass the Comprehensive Exam. The Comprehensive Exam consists of 100 questions and is similar to the one taken by other students. Student veterans must pass the Comprehensive Exam with a minimum of 74% in order to receive course credit for the didactic course.
 
 

NURS 220 Health and Illness I

NURS 220L Health and Illness I Lab

Eligibility
To be eligible for the Course Credit by Exam option, the student must:
Be a veteran of the United States military
Have documentation of military medical training or healthcare experience
Be accepted in a SONDH undergraduate nursing program
Meet with the SONDH’s veteran advisor/counselor
Have received credit for NURS 210 / NURS 210L
Challenge the course in October prior to the NURS 220 / NURS 220L Spring semester enrollment
 
Requirements
In order to gain course credit for NURS 220/220L, student veterans are required to pass the: 
(1) Comprehensive Exam, 
(2) Skills Testing, 
(3) Written Care Plan, and
(4) Standardized Specialty Exam. 
 
All four course requirements must be successfully completed in order to receive course credit for both the didactic and lab portion of NURS 220/220L Health and Illness I. Since the didactic and lab portions of each course are considered co-requisites, partial credit will not be granted i.e., student veterans will not receive course credit for NURS 220 if they pass the didactic portion, but fail the lab or fail the didactic portion, but pass the lab.

(2) Skills Testing 
Skills Testing will include nursing skills required of medical-surgical patients such as wound packing, tracheostomy care, nasogastric tube care, and intravenous drug and fluid management that will be demonstrated in the presence of the VSBN faculty. Student veterans must receive a 100% passing grade within three (3) attempts.
 
(3) Written Care Plan 
With prior instruction and resources, the student veteran will submit a Written Care Plan based on a case study of a patient with a health care problem e.g., congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. (4) Standardized Specialty Exam for NURS 220
Student veterans must complete the Standardized Specialty Exam.
