Clinical Area of Focus: nurse practitioner
The focus of Dr. Niederhauser's scholarly activities and research is health promotion and disease prevention. Many of the causes of morbidity and mortality are directly related to behaviors (the things people do or the things people do not do) therefore if improvements are to be made in health outcomes, the focus of research should be directed towards changing behaviors with a key focus on health promotion and disease prevention. Dr. Niederhauser's scholarly activities and research stem from this belief and passion about the importance of helping children and families to become healthy and stay healthy. Two areas of particular interest are childhood immunizations and childhood obesity. As stated earlier, prevention is the key to becoming a healthier nation. Both acute and chronic illness can be prevented through effective immunization programs and prevention of obesity through healthy lifestyle choices; Dr. Niederhauser has focused her research in these important areas. Most recently, she has been working on the development and psychometric evaluation of an instrument to measure parental barriers to immunizations. The SHOTS (Searching for Hardship and Obstacles To Shots) survey has undergone the initial psychometric evaluation with encouraging findings; further testing of this instrument is planned.
